Understanding your brand position
Last year Eminem released his ninth studio album ‘Kamikaze‘ without any fanfare. There were no marketing materials, no press releases, no heads up. And like a thief in the night, he debuted at the top of the billboard 200 and sold over 500,000 copies – the highest of any artist in 2018.
Two other artist had tried the same move in the not-so- distant past, Beyonce’s Lemonade which sold 485,000 copies in the first week, and Kid Cudi’s Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin which sold only 49,000 copies in the first week.
Bringing it closer home, I watched a new business outlet open up in my neighborhood with no advertising. It took me a couple of weeks to discover it was a restaurant, and today, about one month after opening, the place still looks like a ghost town. Few buildings away, another restaurant is coming up. Judging by the big banners and flyers being shared, we know it’s “The Place” and anticipation is quite high already. Yeah, they are a big deal this way.
Lesson to note, if you are not a known brand, don’t deceive yourself. You need to work to get customers. You need to have a system that lets people know that you exist and give them reasons to buy from you.
The entire process of converting a complete stranger to someone that is interested in purchasing your product or service is loosely known as leads generation. It is not an act, but a nurturing process of getting strangers to trust your brand till they want a piece of you. That potential client is who we refer to as a lead.
Ever wonder why the biggest companies spend billions on customer acquisition? If they do, why do you insist on doing otherwise? They understand that without a steady inflow of new customers, it’s just a matter of time before any business folds up. Talk about being penny wise and pound foolish.
If you are just starting up, it is imperative to have lead generation strategies factored into your plans. And if you are established, it is probably the only thing that will push you through that glass ceiling of stunted growth. It is the life blood of all thriving businesses.
There are free and paid strategies for lead generation, each with its benefits. The paid strategies usually yield faster results, but a combination of both is generally the best way to go.
At the end of the day there is one thing you need to remember, with no leads there’ll be no customers, and no business for you.
