When most people hear of advertising, one of the first thought that pops in their heads is “how much is it going to cost?”. True, some of the most effective forms of advertising or leads generation are paid, there are other strategies that can be employed that will not cost you a dime, and I am going to list out a few.
This is one of the most effective free strategies. Who does not like free things? I am sure you have seen people almost fighting to get free souvenirs at events, some even sneaking foodstuff into their bags at Owambe’s , SMH. Ever taken those small toiletries in hotels? There is just something in our nature that makes us warm inside when we see freebies.
Offer up something related to what you do, so you only get people that are interested in your service. That way, it is easier for you to up-sell them later. For example, if you are into website optimization, you can offer a free website audit. You get the drift!
Ask for referrals
This is directly tied with offering great customer service. Let’s be honest, if you offered shitty service to a customer, there is no way you will be able to ask them for referrals. Not if you want them to book you a seat in jail.
However, if you delivered exceptional service, they will be more than willing to refer their friends to you. You might even want to throw in a referral bonus to sweeten the pot.
Attend networking events
Good places to start from are fairs and exhibitions. Obviously these should be ones in line with your product or service offerings. You do not want to be wasting time at food exhibitions if what you are selling is real estate. However, most people you will meet at a real estate exhibition will be interested in real estate, making it easier to make a pitch to them afterwards.
Revisit closed or old opportunities
When was the last time you looked through your Rolodex, at all those complimentary cards you have collected through the years? Or even your old clients or leads? Most people do not make a purchase the first time they see an opportunity, even if it is good. There are numerous things jostling for their time and resources, so they might have shelved your opportunity till later, then simply forgot.
Periodic reminders are good, to keep you top of mind. Try not to be too pushy, while still reminding them of exactly what they stand to gain. Remember, features tell, while benefits sell.
Write a blog
Not a fan favorite, but very effective in the long run. Have a friend who has been writing his blogs for a few years, and has a subscriber base in tens of thousands. When he finally decides to make a sale on his blog, he makes a killing. In the past, a lot of people shied away from this because they feared they did not have a skill for writing. Thanks to social media, you already have the experience to put yourself out there. It does not have to be long, could even be a video, or good pictures.
Just ensure you put out quality and useful content consistently. In no time, people will begin to see you as an expert in your field, and you would have built a brand with considerable following.
